Calvin understood a lot of things. Too bad Bill Watterson flounced out.

It took me more years of reading Calvin and Hobbes than I wish to admit to realize that “Scrambled Debutante” was a direct play on “Twisted Sister”.

I had a good chuckle over that band name this morning, but I never made the connection.

He stopped while he was on top. Not a bad way to go out. What I do like the most about him is that we don’t have a C&H cartoon, movie, Disney on Ice, playset....I could go on..

I wouldn’t say he flounced. I’d say he was simply done. The comic had a huge run, and I can only imagine how difficult it is to keep something going for so long while keeping it fresh and insightful. Take one look at Peanuts and Garfield and you’ll see that Watterson did exactly the right thing at the right time.

Half the fun of music is having songs that would greatly offend at least one person if they came on while shuffling music. “Little Girls” by Say Anything comes to mind.

That, and he was sick of the pressures of an industry just entering its death throws. He had to fight for every inch of space on Sundays and push to keep his cartoons from being edited down to fit, and had newspaper groups try to run his stuff out of order during story arcs and the like. He got a lot more control over how his comics were printed than was typical for the business, but it was a constant struggle to maintain that, and I figure he just got tired.
There was also a constant pressure from different parties to license the property for animation and merchandise, which he didn’t want to do, which led to the wave of counterfeit merchandise that was difficult to combat, since there wasn’t any legitimate licensee with a business to protect around to go after the fakes.

Yup. Kudos to Watterson for not selling out like Schultz and Davis.
